When I saw Mamoru Hosoda’s The Boy and the Beast, it honestly exceeded my expectations since it was the first anime film I saw that wasn’t produced by Studio Ghibli (and the first film I saw from Hosoda). I even consider it as one of my favorite anime films alongside Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle. I can’t really decide if I like it better than Spirited Away because both films are unique in their own ways. For example, I personally prefer Spirited Away’s diverse shots over The Boy and the Beast’s, but I admire the portrayal of the relationship between Kumatetsu and Kyuta’s relationship over Haku and Chihiro’s.
So I just like both films equally!
